On 12th March I ordered a spare key from the Merc main dealer. This has to come from Germany and it will be another 2 weeks according to the guy at Merc I spoke to today.
I also managed to find a local motor factors place that still sold key fobs for the imobilliser that was fitted to my car in 2001.
